Friends of Camden Park Meadow

Protecting the character, heritage, and landscape of Camden Park Meadow for current and future generations.

Friends of Camden Park Meadow is a community group for individuals and organisations who care about preserving the unique character of Camden Park, its Conservation Area, historic setting, green spaces and the special qualities that make the park such a valued place to live and enjoy.

Recent events have highlighted the importance of ensuring that local voices are heard when decisions are made that may affect the character of Camden Park. By working together, residents and supporters can help safeguard the qualities that make Camden Park distinctive and special.

While recognising the need for privacy and security, our aim is to protect the open character of Camden Park Meadow and the historic views across it, preserving one of the estate's most distinctive and cherished features as intended for future generations.

30 September 2026

Retrospective planning permission for the removal of the iron railings was approved by the TWBC Planning Committee on 30 September 2026. We are reviewing the decision to decide next steps. Our initial view is the Council's decision was made without full regard to the legal facts presented and its reasoning was inconsistent.

Achievements to date

  • Helped raise awareness of the importance of Camden Park Meadow as a key feature of the Camden Park Conservation Area and a valued local green space.
  • Coordinated and supported objections to planning application 26/01121/FULL, resulting in more than 120 representations being submitted to Tunbridge Wells Borough Council.
  • Gathered and shared historical information, photographs and evidence demonstrating the long-standing contribution of the original railings to views across the Meadow and the character of Camden Park.
  • Commissioned independent planning and legal analysis highlighting concerns regarding the assessment of heritage impacts and the application of planning policy.
  • Helped ensure that the application received significant public scrutiny and was not determined at the July Planning Committee meeting, which was subsequently deferred.
  • Commissioned a KC legal opinion that identified numerous legal inaccuracies, procedural concerns, and inconsistencies in the Council's assessment, providing a strong basis for challenging the recommendation and securing further scrutiny of the application.
